This book is incredibly well written. I couldn’t put it down! Ruoff shares from the depth of her soul. You will come to know the family members well, and quickly become emotionally attached to them… breath-taking opening is followed by how they somehow managed to find their way through to a victorious place in the present. This book is about the horrific possibility all parents are terrified of having to face, yet it brings hope and comfort to those who are facing it right now — it carries the message that there is a way through.
The author, Dr. Janis Ruoff, shares, with humility, honesty, and humor, her family’s journey… a valuable example of how an accident that lasted minutes continues to impact the family decades late. As a doctor who has cared for patients and families living with Traumatic Brain Injury I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Ruoff draws the reader in by depicting endearing and forthright scenarios about complex family system dynamics associated with a TBI. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance fill the pages about how a family makes the best of life after tragedy. As a professional working in the mental health field, I found the book quite compelling. Many individuals are not aware of the comorbidity of mental health issues and brain injury and this book helps underscore the importance of getting a thorough psycho-social assessment for a loved one in order to address all avenues related to the injury. It is a page turner, I highly recommend it.

As a Special Educator, I see the impact of a Traumatic Brain Injury in the student’s learning. Crashing Through Walls is an appropriate metaphor! Janis shows us how not only must the victim go through barriers of thinking, learning, and understanding, the family goes through it all as well. Those outside of the family, see the physical scars gone and often forget that the impact of the injury is not.

I literally read it in one night…Never went to sleep. The story is that gripping… what can happen to a family in a second that will turn everything upside down. This could be a movie one day!

I wish this book could be available to all families after the initial shock of a traumatic brain injury wears off. I have felt every one of the emotions Janis so eloquently expresses in her book. Families are the “forgotten ones” when a loved one suffers a TBI…Thank you, Janis, for bring families into the discussion…
No one can predict how the lives of the family of a TBI survivor will forever be changed. Dr. Ruoff has shared her experiences before and after her son Jeff’s TBI.Jeff provides powerful insights throughout the book about the awakening mind of a TBI survivor. This book should be recommended reading for every family…the military should hand them out to all TBI survivors’ families!
Excellent! You can truly get a sense of her emotions; frustration, anger, and hopes from the uncertainty of her son’s future and learning to piece life together after TBI.
